Steria acts as prime contractor for the new road traffic supervision system in the Swiss canton of Zurich.

Steria, the end-to-end European IT services provider and a key reference in delivering IT solutions for the transport business, has planned, developed and implemented a new road traffic supervision system for the Swiss canton of Zurich. The new system, which is set to become the country's biggest of its kind, will go live at the same time as the opening of the first section of the western Zurich bypass.

The launch of the Steria road traffic supervision system has been timed to coincide with the opening of the first section of the Birmensdorf bypass. It will enable the canton police and the Tiefbauamt (Zurich canton civil engineering department) to supervise the electromechanical equipment and security of major Zurich roads from a centralised vantage point and obtain real-time information on any incidents regarding the traffic on the roads (accidents, fires, etc.) or the technical infrastructure (breakdowns, system failures, etc.). The authorities can then use the data to trigger the necessary response: calling the fire brigade and/or an ambulance in the event of an accident, or a technician to manage a breakdown.

Up to 15 functionalities will be incorporated into the system, which will initially cover the Eggrain and Hafnerberg tunnels in the western Zurich bypass. They include emergency terminals, lighting, ventilation, fire detection systems and regulating traffic in the tunnels. Around 30 tunnels, including Gubrist, Milchbuck and Schöneich, are due to be gradually integrated into the supervision system between now and 2010.

Steria's road traffic supervision system is powered by an Intranet solution based on web services and J2EE applications. It is managed around the clock from the Zurich road traffic control centre and the Tiefbauamt operations centre in Urdorf and can handle up to 100 messages per second.

The solution comprises the supervision system, 20 strategic systems and 200 control systems for each of the processes required to manage the tunnel and open air sections of the bypass (lighting, SOS terminals, fire detection systems, etc.). Two mainframe computers, installed at the traffic control and operations centre in Urdorf, interface the data thus received and transmit the information from the control systems to the strategic coordination system.

Hans Meier, head of the Zurich canton electromechanical road installation department had this to say: "We chose Steria for their proven international expertise in providing command and control systems for the transport industry, a highly specialised sector of activity. Their references and the flexibility of their solution in terms of our requirements convinced us that it would be possible to improve the quality of service we deliver to users within a very short timeframe."

"This road traffic supervision system is one of the most extensive networks of its kind ever introduced in Switzerland," added Thomas Sauder, Steria project manager for the supervision system. "This new contract not only confirms Steria's expertise in the field of road transport, but also our ability to implement solutions that can be tailored to the specific needs of our customers in a short period of time."
