At the request of the civil aviation department (STAC ), responsible for airport and aeronautical technical matters for the DGAC's security screening department (DCS ), Steria has carried out a study on migrating the automated access control systems currently in use in France's airports to integrate new RFID and biometric technologies. The migration process will affect the 300,000 airport staff who must prove their identity on a daily basis simply to access their place of work.

Operating staff, ground staff, maintenance staff make up the 300,000 people who work in and around French airports and who must identify themselves on a daily basis simply to get to work. In a bid to increase security at all French airports, the STAC commissioned Steria to study the impact of migrating existing access control systems to incorporate RFID technology and biometric control systems. The study was conducted in 2005 by Imelios, Steria France's security subsidiary, and included all airports in the country with the intention of upgrading the entire network.

In concrete terms – and in the scope of the increased safety measures applied in airports since September 11, 2001 – the research conducted by the Group in association with the French government has resulted in:

• the mapping of existing systems in the different airports;
• the definition of methods for migrating these operating systems to RFID or biometrics;
• and the measurement of the economic and operating impact of the process.
