The UK's Office of the Deputy Prime Minister calls on Steria to provide fully managed IT and consultancy services

Steria has signed a 5-year contract to become the strategic IT partner of the ODPM (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister). This new relationship will result in substantial cost savings for the ODPM, as well as improving its operating performance and upping service quality levels, enabling an increasingly flexible work environment. The contract is worth €44 million and will provide robust, yet flexible IT services to over 3,000 users across sites all over the UK. Steria was selected following an intense EU tendering process involving major global competitors including Fujitsu Services and Unisys.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister is in charge of creating sustainable communities, in relations with other Government departments, local councils, businesses, the voluntary sector and communities themselves.

Steria will work closely with the ODPM to identify those areas of its activity that could perform more effectively and efficiently through the introduction of enabling technologies. Steria's sub-contractor, Capgemini, will support the ODPM through the changes brought about by implementing such technologies.

In addition to providing a fully managed infrastructure service to all users, two major projects will be launched in 2006. The first, known as LINK, is a project to design a new infrastructure based upon Microsoft (MS) Exchange technology and to roll it out across the ODPM user base working at various regional sites. A key challenge is to migrate all data from the existing Novell/Groupwise infrastructure to MS Exchange and the new LINK environment by the end of 2006. LINK will provide more user-friendly tools and IT services, particularly personal productivity tools such as Microsoft Office.

In parallel with the LINK project, Steria is to develop a pilot Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS), which will initially be tested by a panel of 300 users from the same department. Currently, data storage methods vary from one department to the next but the new system should make sharing information between offices an easier task. It will be rolled out at the other departments once the pilot phase is complete.

The ODPM will benefit from Steria's extensive experience in delivering IT services and solutions through the integration of new and innovative enabling technologies throughout the duration of the contract. Steria will also be responsible for the day-to-day delivery and management of the ODPM's wide and local area networks (WAN/LAN), as well as for IT support services via its Intelligent Service Desk. Steria will provide on-site support for users at the ODPM's London offices and roaming support at the other sites in order to ensure that all employees experience the same high standard of IT service, regardless of their geographical location or field of activity.
