Steria and Environmental Policy

Environmental Policy

Environmental concerns have become one of the prevailing issues of our time. At Steria, we are making it our business to operate in the most environmentally friendly way. It is also our business to help our clients – in both the public and private sectors – to do the same. Though we have not yet achieved complete sustainability in environmental terms, our journey has begun well, with two major milestones: improved management of our own operations and the development of Green IT services for our clients.

Reduce transportation
Since 2008 Steria encourages its employees to reduce CO2 emissions. New Car Policy rewards through a bonus / malus system using environmentally friendly vehicles. For commuting even a combination of company car and public transport is possible. Also the first "business cycle", to replace the car, was introduced and all the employees get the opportunity to participate in eco-drive workshops.
Steria installed an international video conferencing network for all its sites so that travel ling between remote sites is considerably reduced.

All in a day’s work
We are always looking at more general ways to improve environmental performance including energy savings through the central adjustment of lighting and optimize heating and cooling. We reduce paper trough the compression of contents pages and appendices in standard documents. Waste is reduced trough usage of mugs instead of plastic cups.

Reducing datacenter power consumption
Server consolidation and virtualization and lower energy consumption together with efficient cooling is our prime green datacenter concern. Our datacenters are cooled with state of art invertor type of heatpumps that reduce energy consumption by more than 40% and lower our Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) factor year after year.

Measure and improve
Steria, participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project 2009 (CDP2009) achieved a score of 79%. We are using this data and are testing their relevance in order to achieve our objective to become ISO 14001 certified for 2010. This will enable us to develop meaningful and realistic, yet stretching, targets that will apply to our business.
The efforts of all Steria employees will be essential in achieving these targets. To co-ordinate activities to reduce the Group’s environmental impact, we have set up an international Group Green Committee to implement the necessary changes.

Providing a greener service
In addition to getting our own house in order, Steria is helping our clients to become more environmentally sustainable as well. The very nature of the business we are in, especially IT outsourcing additionally helps our clients to become more efficient in terms of achieving their own green targets.
